PHASE I SITE SURVEY APPROACH

Objective:

The objective of the site survey is, to provide your company with a Automatic Identification Data Collection " AIDC" Strategic Plan and the required information to implement successful data collection systems.

Scope:

The scope of the survey involves each area of the process. The current methods of data collection and associated systems are thoroughly investigated. The return on investment of each area is determined, and the correct hardware and software alternatives given.

Time Frame:

Consulting time typically takes three to fifteen days, depending upon the facility; there are usually several functional areas to investigate (see project schedules). The following describes the process that will be followed.

Education:

An introduction to AIDC technology is conducted for key management personnel. This two-hour presentation covers the following topics:

Getting Started with AIDC
Introduction to Symbology & Standards
Printing, Verification, Scanning & Data Collection Terminals
Applications

This presentation is designed to give an overview of AIDC technology, and potential applications in each functional area of the organization. Presentation contents will be tuned to the organization and its applications. This presentation is held at the start of the survey.

Investigation Phase:

The investigation phase is based on interviews and data collected during the interview. While at your facility, the consultant will:

Observe existing practices
Review plans
Interview key personnel in each functional area
Collect, develop, analyze, and evaluate data
Structure and evaluate recommended alternatives
Recommend locations for data collection equipment on submitted layouts
Develop preliminary justification and cost savings estimates

Process Used:

This process will reflect a depth of analysis required for the complete problem solution. One or more of the techniques described below will be used to determine the best system design.

Operation Process Chart
This is a graphical technique for analyzing and planning an overall flow pattern. It takes the form of a schematic representation of the total process.

Flow Diagrams
This is a graphical presentation of the flow pattern drawn on an existing floor plan of the area involved. The flow diagram will determine detailed equipment requirements.

The activities performed in this phase lead to conceptual definition of the system design and equipment required. As part of this phase, the consultant will assist your organization's operational and financial staff in preparing documentation needed for final project presentation, justification, and approval. Normally included are narratives that address project objectives, findings, equipment requirements, and action plans.

Interview Process:

The consultant will also interview the management, supervisor, and lead personnel who are totally familiar with their operations. Each manager should provide a copy of all current production paper now being used by that operation. The consultant will also require:

Two copies of the current floor plan
A list of the number of employees and their pay grades
Current computer equipment configuration

Analysis Phase:

An analysis will then be conducted in each area, to establish material and documentation flow patterns. The interview and analysis will be repeated until all operational areas have been covered.

Report Phase:

A full report will be presented at the conclusion of this phase, and will take approximately ten working days after the site survey. This report will include:

A Phased Implementation Approach for the AIDC Project
A Detailed Breakdown of Present System Cost
Proposed System Hardware and Software Cost
Cost Justification and Proposed System ROI and Pay-back Period
Equipment and Wiring Layouts
Proposed System Specifications
Report Formats
Label & Menu Design
Prompting Sequences for the Readers
Data Elements
Process Flow Patterns
Recommended Process Changes
Vendor Selection Criteria

Summary:

The result of this phase is a document that forms the basis for subsequent phases. This study will provide management of your company with the data to make a sound decision as to where and how to implement successful AIDC systems.

AIDC Standards:

Internal and external AIDC standards will optionally be developed in conjunction with your steering committee. The latest ANSI Data Identifiers and or GS1 Application Identifiers, ISO, MH-10 standards will be incorporated.

Implementation Phase II (Optional)

A vendor bid specification (RFQ) will be developed, based on phase I and e-mailed out to the leading AIDC vendors. Pre selected vendors will be asked to give a formal presentation to the AIDC Steering Committee. The selection of the vendor will be based on:

Cost
Experience with current host system and industry
Documentation Provided
Training Provided
References
Acceptance Testing Criteria
Once a vendor is selected, that vendor will be responsible to insure that the data collection systems meets all functional requirements and is implemented on scheduled as specified by your company.

PROJECT SCHEDULES

FINANCIAL PLAN

FEES:

Consulting fees are based on a daily rate of: $1,950.00 / per man / per day plus reasonable travel expenses. The amount of time involved and the cost will be determined after analyzing the size and scope of the project.

EXPENSES TO INCLUDE:

Travel Expense: All reasonable travel expenses will be paid by the customer, which will include, coach air fare, meals, rental car and hotel accommodations. (Business Class for International locations)

PAYMENT SCHEDULE:

To start this project, a purchase order is required. Payment due upon completion of services.

PROPOSAL:

For a proposal on the amount of consulting time which would be involved on your project:

Option 1 e-mail the following:

Type of Industry:

Number of Facilities Involved:

Number of Interviews per Facility:

List of Applications:

Option 2 On-Site:

A two hour AIDC training class will be given to your AIDC steering committee. This will be given after a facility tour so that the training can reflect your process.
